Posting on the BMW List

What to Post, What Not to Post to the Boulder Media Women List

We are a pretty easy-going group of women. But with some 500 people on the list, we need some guidelines. PLEASE READ.

Forbidden on the list

  • Flames (personal attacks and rude critical comments)
  • Petitions, chain letters, appeals for funds for non-media related charities
  • Third-party classified ads (as in, “my friend has a couch for sale”)
  • RSVPs (send it to the individual, not the list; Tuesday schmooze in an exception)
  • Personal notes that are of absolutely no interest to most of the people on the list (as in “can’t wait to see you at your reading!”)
  • Responses to OTs that are of no interest to anyone else. (If you are responding to something for sale, we don’t need to hear about it. If you are responding to a request for suggestions on accountants, yes, we might all want to hear about it.)
  • Requests for reposting of information such as potluck dates and directions. Please find the Events page on this site.
  • Copying back the entire digest.
  • Reprinting, reposting, or using in any way the contents of someone’s email to this list. It belongs to the person who sent it, period. (Brief quotebacks in responding email are fine.)

OK to post

You may post anything that is related to the media business, including, but not limited to:

  • Media job listings
  • Business practice questions
  • Craft questions
  • Interviewee searches
  • Requests for support on PROFESSIONAL media-related projects – voting to “like” a page, asking for comments on a blog, votes on a “best of” site, etc.
  • Professional recommendations (accountants, lawyers, computer repair techs)
  • Health insurance discussions
  • Event notices related to media
  • Notices of publication or other professional accomplishments
  • Congratulations on professional accomplishments (but after a few public ones have appeared, take it offline)
  • Potluck invites

It’s OK to post OTs, such as –

  • Other event notices that you think might interest the group (within reason!)
  • Requests for recommendations of doctors, dentists, etc.
  • Items that you have for sale (within reason!)

But please use OT in your subject line. And please do not post an OT event more often than once a month.

Reminders

PLEASE use descriptive subject lines so people can easily delete messages:

  • “Come to our event” is not descriptive
  • “Bookstore reading on 4/25” is descriptive
  • “Digest 1234” is not descriptive
